Day Five: Have Fun

Get together for a little party or social, no matter how small.

Reminisce about "back in the day," which was only 4 days ago.

Drink beer, eat pizza - whatever comfort food.

Don't forget to surf.

Day Four: Take it Easy

Make sure you've gotten everything you need from the office. Return everyone's email.

Flake off and go surfing.

Start to think about your priorities.

Try not to spend any money.

Maybe collect on an old debt.

Start reading again.

Practice something.

Day Three: Visit with a Friend

Visit your friends at work for lunch.

Get yourself out there.

Do not express regret.

Do not criticize your former employer, even if others might.

Scope out at least one job lead.

If you haven't already hung out with your best friend, now's the time.

Play something.

Continue to write and draw.

Get exercise - I totally recommend surfing.

Day Two: Get Referrals

Get out of the house.

Wait - make sure your resume is tight before you leave the house.

Return to the office to pick up some things and let everyone know you're cool.

linkedin Direct any sentimentality into writing or getting referrals. Try LinkedIn.

Grab all your things and leave your workspace neat. Leave a note if you want.

Bail and go surfing again.

Talk to Mom and Dad that night if possible.

Day One: Play it Cool

As soon as you learn the news: Play it cool.

Ask questions.

Present an alternate scenario.

When it's clear that there is no negotiation, bow out gracefully.

Stay cool.

Grab what you need from the office, tell your coworkers you'll talk to them later, and go get some exercise.

If possible, go surfing.

Pet the dog.

Play with the dog.

Write.

Sleep.
